Full-Day Trips

Natchez Trace Parkway to Rocky Springs
$20-30 (gas + park entry)The 40-mile stretch from Jackson to Rocky Springs shows the Trace at its most dramatic, emerald canyons, 200-year-old sycamores, and the ghost town of Rocky Springs where you can walk through a vanished 19th-century settlement.
Vicksburg National Military Park
$15 (park entry) + $20 gasThe site of the Civil War's turning-point siege sprawls across 1,800 acres with preserved trenches, ironclad gunboats, and a cemetery holding 17,000 Union graves. The 16-mile driving tour takes you through actual battle sites.
Natchez Pilgrimage
$35-50 (house tour tickets + gas)Natchez transforms during spring and fall pilgrimages when private antebellum homes open their doors. Even off-season, the concentration of pre-Civil War mansions along the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi is staggering.
Delta Blues Trail: Clarksdale and Ground Zero
$40-60 (museum + gas + club cover)Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale anchors the Delta blues scene where Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul. The Delta Blues Museum holds Muddy Waters' actual cabin from Stovall plantation.
Ross Barnett Reservoir and Pelahatchie Bay
$20-30 (gas + lunch)The 'Rez' is Jackson's outdoor playground with 33,000 acres of water surrounded by hiking trails, fishing spots, and waterfront restaurants where you can dock your boat for catfish.
Florewood State Park and Mississippi River
$15-25 (gas + park entry)This overlooked state park sits right on the Mississippi River with empty hiking trails and panoramic views of the river traffic. The levee road offers 20 miles of uninterrupted river access.
Jackson to Oxford via Yazoo County
$35-45 (gas + Rowan Oak tour + books)The back-road route through Yazoo County passes through Bentonia, home of blues legend Skip James, and hits Oxford's historic Square where Faulkner once drank at the same bars that serve craft cocktails today.
Half-Day Options
Shorter excursions when time is limited.
Ridgeland's Natchez Trace Multi-Use Path
$10-15 (gas)A paved 10-mile path through cypress swamps just 20 minutes from downtown Jackson. Good for cycling or walking with interpretive signs explaining the old Trace.
Brandon Reservoir
$10-15 (gas)Local fishing spot with a 3-mile hiking loop around the water. Weekday mornings you'll have the place to yourself except for anglers.
Canton Historic Square
$15-20 (gas + coffee)Square used in 'A Time to Kill' and 'O Brother, Where Art Thou' with well-preserved 19th-century storefronts and a surprisingly good coffee shop.
Pearl River Kayaking
$25-35 (kayak rental)Launch from LeFleur's Bluff State Park for a 2-hour paddle through downtown-adjacent swampland. You'll see herons, turtles, and downtown's skyline.
Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.
- ✓ Start early, Delta destinations like Clarksdale require 1.5+ hours driving each way, and you'll want daylight for the return trip.
- ✓ Fill up in Jackson before heading out, gas stations thin out past Flora on US-49 and past Raymond on I-20.
- ✓ Download offline maps, cell service drops between Edwards and Vicksburg on I-20, and it's nonexistent on the Natchez Trace.
- ✓ Bring cash for Delta juke joints and small-town barbecue shacks, many don't take cards and ATMs are scarce.
- ✓ Check courthouse hours for historic towns like Natchez and Canton, most close at 5 p.m. sharp.
- ✓ Summer heat is brutal, pack twice the water you think you need, for Natchez Trace hikes.
- ✓ Weekend traffic on I-20 to Vicksburg backs up around Clinton, leave by 7:30 a.m. or take US-80 instead.
